词源 | cave!; Five-O; shote! In Britain cave! (pronounced in two syllables) has traditionally been used by schoolboy lookouts to warn others in a group that a master (teacher), policeman, or any adult is approaching and they’d better clear out or stop what they are doing. Cave is Latin for “beware,” and Cave Ca- nem signs in ancient Rome meant Beware of Dog. In the U.S. the warning would be chickee! or cheese it, or Five-O (after the police drama Hawaii Five-O). The Scottish equivalent is shote! |
