词汇 cecil-s fast
词源
Cecil’s fast. In an attempt to improve the fish trade in En- gland, Queen Elizabeth’s longtime minister William Cecil, bar- on Burghley, had legislation passed requiring Englishmen to eat fish and no meat on certain days of the week. Beef-eating and mutton-eating Britons didn’t much like the idea and dubbed all fish dinners Cecil’s fasts. Possibly the idea remained distasteful to Englishmen for over two centuries, because in the early 1800s, cold hash patties were being called Cecils—another substitute for “real” meat.
