词汇 | cellophane |
词源 | cellophane. Cellophane is a good example of a trademark name that became a generic term. The transparent, waterproof, paperlike substance commonly used to wrap products was a trademark up until 1915, when the courts ruled that it had been used too often generically to be protected anymore. Much the same happened to the word celluloid, the first synthetic plastic. Cellophane derives from cellulose, the main constituent of plant tissue, and the French diaphane, “transparent.” See aspirin. |
