celery. Celery is the selinon mentioned by Homer in the Od- yssey, but the word comes to us directly from the French céléri, a derivation from the Greek word for the vegetable. Celery has been cultivated for centuries and its wild form, smallage, has been gathered in its native Mediterranean home for thousands of years. The Greeks held bitter smallage in high esteem and awarded stalks of it to winners of athletic contests. |
