parlay. Parlay is an Americanism first recorded in 1828, but probably used before then, that means to wager money on a horse race, cards or other sports event, and continue to bet the original stake plus all winnings on the next race, hand, or the like. The word derives from the Italian paro, meaning equal. It has since been extended to mean to use one’s money, talent, or other assets to achieve a desired objective, such as spectacular wealth or success: “He parlayed his small inheritance into a great fortune.” |
