词汇 | robert e lee |
词源 | Robert E. Lee. Though it is rarely given in brief accounts of his life, the E. in the great Southern Civil War general’s name stands for Edward. He is widely known as Robert E. Lee, but actually he was most often called R. E. Lee during the war, and sometimes the Gray Fox, Marse Robert, Uncle Robert, the King of Spades (for always urging his men to dig in deeper, deeper), the Great Entrencher, (the Southern “chivalry” were called the “shovelry”), and even Granny Lee (he was 57 and constantly fretted about his troops), but rarely Robert E. Lee or Robert Edward Lee, and never Bobby Lee to his face if one didn’t want to provoke his famous temper. The more stately Robert E. Lee is the name found today in all the histories of the Brothers’ War and on a myriad of statues throughout the South. See ulysses s. grant. |
