Palmetto State. A nickname for South Carolina, after the palm tree called a palmetto that commonly grows there. South Carolina has also been called the Gamecock State (in honor of fiery Revolutionary War general Thomas “Gamecock” Sumter, after whom historic Fort Sumter is named), the Rice State, and the Swamp State. It is called the Sandlapper or Sand-hiller State after poor people in its sandy regions who ate aluminous earth to fill their stomachs. See clay-eater. |
