词汇 | fast as ladas |
词源 | fast as Ladas. This literary reference is rarely heard today but should be remembered, for Alexander the Great’s courier Ladas was said to run so fast that he never left a footprint. Other leg- endary runners include Queen Camilla of the Volsci, who, ac- cording to Virgil in the Aeneid, could run over water without getting her feet wet; and the Greek Iphicles, who, the Greek poet Hesiod says, could run over standing corn (wheat) with- out bending the ears. The Greek god Hermes (Mercury to the Romans) was swifter than all of them and was represented with wings on his sandals. |
