词汇 | hookworm |
词源 | hookworm. The parasitic hookworm is so called because of its hooked mouthparts, with which they fasten themselves to the intestinal walls of various hosts, including humans. The nematode was also called “the germ of laziness,” because it made its victims anemic, lethargic, and dull-witted, afflicting about one-third of people in the American South. Shed in fe- ces, the worm was picked up by bare feet. It diminished greatly when many more people were convinced to stop going barefoot and began to wear shoes. |
