A traveler in North America in 1817 reported that “[the Indian chiefs] called the whiskey fire water.” An accurate description of whiskey’s taste going down, especially the whis- key Indians were traded, firewater is probably a translation of the Algonquian Indian scoutiouabou, meaning the same.
