词汇 | first lady |
词源 | First Lady. The first First Lady of (or in) the land was Dolley Madison, according to one old story, but most writers say the honorary title dates from the mid-19th century, long after Dol- ley served as Thomas Jefferson’s and later her husband, James Madison’s, official hostess. The first mention of First Lady is in British correspondent William Russell’s My Diary North and South (1863): “The gentleman . . . has some charming little pieces of gossip about the first Lady in the Land [then Mary Todd Lincoln].” Dolley Madison did, however, die in 1849, so there might be some connection between her and the title. The term is also used, usually uncapitalized, for a prominent wom- an in any profession, as in “She’s the first lady of the American theater.” An old joke makes First Lady a synonym for spare ribs, because Eve was made from Adam’s spare rib. Jacqueline Kennedy is the only First Lady who didn’t want to be called First Lady. She said it sounded like the name of a saddle horse. |
