A 2002 poll by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni revealed that only 42 percent of all students at Ameri- ca’s top 55 universities could identify George Washington as the man described by this phrase. Its author was intrepid Henry Lee (1756–1818), who included it in Resolutions Pre- sented to the House of Representatives on the Death of Washing- ton (December 26, 1799). Lee, called Lighthorse Henry Lee, served as an officer under Washington in the Revolutionary War. Southern Civil War leader Robert E. Lee was his son. See washington.
