词汇 hollywood
词源
Hollywood. There is no proof for the tale that the film capital of the world, laid out in 1887, was first called Holywood by its pious founders, this corrupted to Hollywood as the town cor- rupted. Hollywood may have been named for the native Cali- fornia holly or toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), a large shrub that isn’t a true holly but whose scarlet berries, borne from Christmas to Easter, suggest the holly and are much used for Christmas ornaments. Most probably, however, Tinseltown takes its name from the name of a ranch in the area owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Henderson, or from a hamlet named Hol- lywood in 1887 by the Wilcox family, who farmed in the area. It is hard to find anyone with many kind words for Hollywood. “It’s hard to tell where Hollywood ends and the DTs begin,” said W. C. Fields. “Hollywood’s a trip through a sewer in a glass- bottomed boat,” said Wilson Mizner. “Hollywood impresses me as being ten million dollars worth of intricate and highly ingenious machinery functioning elaborately to put skin on baloney,” observed drama critic George Jean Nathan. Said co- median Fred Allen: “All the sincerity in Hollywood can be put into a gnat’s navel and you’d still have room for three caraway seeds and an agent’s heart.”
