he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. The Athenian orator Demosthenes when a young man fought in the infantry against the Macedonians at the battle of Chaero- nea. The Athenians were overwhelmed, losing 3,000 men, and Demosthenes deserted the battlefield. When he was called a coward, however, he replied, “The man who runs away may fight again,” which is the original of this saying. See demosthenic. |
