词源 | thanks for nothing. One might think this is a sarcastic con- temporary rejoinder to someone who has made an unacceptable offer. Its ancestor, however, is a line from Cervantes’s Don Quix- ote (1605–15): “Thank you for nothing.” Others of the several hundred phrases first recorded in that great novel include the sunset of my brows; in a pickle; without a wink of sleep; no limits but the sky (the sky’s the limit); a finger in every pie; every dog has its day; you may go whistle; I give up the ghost; let every man mind his own business; within a stone’s throw; naked I came into this world, and naked must I go out; thou has seen nothing yet; give the devil his due; wild-goose chase; I shall cry my heart out; split his sides with laughter; think before thou speakest; let us for- get and forgive injuries (forgive and forget); I must speak the truth and nothing but the truth; I begin to smell a rat; birds of a feather flock together; the proof of the pudding is in the eating; the fair sex; neither will I make myself anybody’s laughingstock; fore- warned forearmed; turn over a new leaf; honesty’s the best policy; he would not budge an inch; with a grain of salt; mum’s the word; the pot calls the kettle black; there were but two families in the world, Have-much and Have-little (haves and have-nots). |
