词汇 | crocus |
词源 | crocus. The showy solitary flower known as the crocus, one of the first flowers of spring, takes its name from the Greek word for saffron. The stamens of Crocus sativus, the autumn crocus, one of the 80 or so species of crocus, have indeed been used to make saffron since prehistoric times. It takes some 225,000 hand-picked stamens to produce just one pound of saffron, making it one of the world’s costliest spices. A crocus sack or gunnysack, a sack made of coarse material such as bur- lap, is so named because crocuses, or saffron, was first shipped in sacks made of this material. Hall of Fame sportscaster Red Barber (1907–92) sometimes used the Americanism tied up in a crocus sack for a game that was sewed up, a sure win for one team. See saffron. |
