词汇 | crillon |
词源 | Crillon. “The bravest of the brave,” as he was called by Henry IV, is still remembered more than four centuries after his birth, by the famed Paris hôtel named in his honor. Louis Balbis de Berton de Crillon (1541 or 1543–1615) was a French soldier who joined the army when only 14, distinguised himself in many battles, was wounded numerous times, and became one of the greatest captains of the 16th century. It is said that in his old age Crillon was listening to the story of the crucifixion in church one day and, unable to bear the outrages Christ had suf- fered any longer, leaped to his feet, drawing his sword and cry- ing out, “Where were you then, Crillon?” |
