词汇 | cribbage |
词源 | cribbage. The brilliant Cavalier poet and playwright Sir John Suckling (1609–41) is probably the only poet ever to invent a popular card game. According to his contemporary John Au- brey’s Lives (first published 1813), Suckling, the greatest gallant and gamester of his day, invented and named the game of crib- bage in about 1630. He named the game for the set of cards in it called the crib. The only other author I can think of who in- vented a card game is American novelist Frank Harris. His por- nographic game, called Dirty Banshee, came complete with playing cards depicting satyrs and goddesses engaged in sexual acts. It was never sold to the public. |
