词汇 | teflon |
词源 | Teflon; Teflon Don. Teflon is the trademark name for a chem- ical substance used to make nonstick cooking pans that Dupont introduced in 1945. Metaphorical use of the word didn’t come until the 1980s, when it was used to describe Ronald Reagan as the “Teflon President” because no scandal or criticism seemed to stick to him. Said Representative Patricia Schroeder during a 1983 speech, in which she may have coined the new term: “Ro- nald Reagan . . . has been perfecting the Teflon-coated Presi- dency. He sees to it that nothing sticks to him.” The term has since been applied to several politicians, including former Presi- dent Clinton, but is best known as the nickname of John “the Teflon Don” Gotti, a New York Mafia crime boss. Before he was finally sentenced to life in prison, Gotti and his lawyers had managed to beat every charge brought against him. |
