词源 | grapes of wrath; wrath of grapes. The words grapes of wrath are from Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (1862), which was often sung by Union soldiers in the Civil War: “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; / He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. . . .” The words are also the title of John Steinbeck’s novel (1938) and the movie made from it (1939). The term wrath of grapes is a recent humorous phrase for a hangover. |
