grape; grapefruit; wineberry. Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) resemble grapes only in that they grow in clusters on their trees, but that was sufficient reason to bestow the name upon them, early explorers in Barbados thought. Grapes themselves look nothing like their namesakes. Grapes were named for the grape, or grapple, the small hook that the French used to har- vest them. The English called grapes wineberries until they im- ported the French word toward the end of the 11th century. |
