词汇 | grauman-s chinese theater |
词源 | Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Since 1927 scores of movie stars have left imprints of their feet and hands in cement out- side Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles; the first was Hollywood actress Norma Talmadge. A good number of stars, however, left more imaginative imprints for posterity. Jimmy “The Schnoz” Durante, for example, impressed his impressive nose in the forecourt sidewalk, and comedian Joe E. Brown left a likeness of his huge mouth, while Betty Grable laid down one of her “million-dollar legs” and Mickey Mouse left his paw prints. The hoofprints of cowboy star Gene Autry’s faithful horse, Champion, and Roy Rogers’s Trigger are also enshrined outside Grauman’s, as is Al Jolson’s right knee, which he knelt on white singing “Mammy.” So are matinee idol John Barry- more’s profile and actor Monty Woolley’s beard. The theater, now owned by the Mann Theaters Corporation, has no plans to discontinue this tradition begun in the first year it was built. |
