greasy luck. Whalemen “trying out” oil from whale blubber on the decks of whaleships in the 19th century invented this expression, meaning “good luck.” The decks became very greasy or slippery at such times, and this was considered lucky be- cause it meant a more prosperous voyage. Well-wishers often wished whaleman “greasy luck” when they embarked on a voy- age. In Britain today greasy is still a synonym for slippery. |
