词汇 grass
词源
grass. All the words in the sentence Grass grows green come from one source, the Teutonic gro, which in turn derives from the Aryan ghra, to grow. Our word graze also ultimately comes from this source. Grasses are worldwide in distribution and a listing of them would fill a large book. It has been noted that the grass family supports the temperate and tropical world, containing as it does wheat, corn, rice, rye, barley, oats, and sugarcane. But most people think of lawns or meadows when they think of grass, as is witnessed by common American say- ings such as “don’t let the grass grow under your feet”—don’t be lazy, be active and energetic. Such grass is probably one of the few plants that almost everyone can identify, though not the many varieties of it. Home lawns made of grass covered about 23 million acres across the U.S. in 1995.
