Calhounery. John C. Calhoun (1782–1850), the preeminent spokesman of the South and a giant intellect of his day, is re- membered in historical dictionaries by this word, first recorded in 1837. Calhounery, despite the nice ring to it, was not of his making. It is a historical term once used to describe causes such as stuffing ballet boxes, permitting illegal votes to be cast, and so forth—all practices not of the vice president but of his supporters, who were called Calhounites or Calhounists.
