词汇 ménière-s disease
词源
Ménière’s disease. According to the Family Medical Guide (1976), this disease of the inner ear “is characterized by attacks that commence suddenly with violent dizziness, ringing in the ear, vomiting, a reeling sensation and unsteadiness of body equilibrium so severe that if the person does not lie down, he would fall to the floor. . . .” Bouts may last from a half hour to several weeks. The disease is named after French physician and otologist Prosper Ménière (1799–1862), who first described it. English author Jonathan Swift is thought to have suffered all his life from Ménière’s disease or syndrome, long before it was so named. Although he tried many nostrums to improve his con- dition, including long walks of up to 38 miles, Swift became to- ward the end of his life “like the ruin of a great empire,” as Thackeray put it. Swift came to have so little use for life that as his customary farewell to friends he would say, “Good night, I hope I never see you again.”
