词汇 | myriad |
词源 | myriad. Before million was introduced in about the 12th century the largest number word was myriad, which derives from a Greek word meaning countless, infinite, and was then Greek for 10,000. One ancient eclessiastical historian wrote of “a hundred and ten myriads” (1,100,000) slain and starved to death over a certain period, and Archimedes wrote of the myriads of myriads of myriads of poppy seeds in the world. Today myriad is used chiefly to mean countless or innumerable. |
