词汇 | myrrh |
词源 | myrrh. “A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts,” says the Song of Solomon. Unfortunately, the aromatic herb sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) that is common to Europe is not the fabled myrrh of the Bible. The word myrrh comes from the Greek name for perfume, but the biblical myrrh, which is still used to make incense and perfumes, was probably obtained from the spiny shrub Com- miphora myrrha. Myrrh’s age-old reputation is shown in the classical myth of Myrrh, a daughter of King Cinyras, whom the gods changed into a myrrh tree for having incestuous relations with her father. (Their child Adonis was born from the split trunk of the tree.) Frankincense has a similar reputation and is also still used in incense and perfumes. This biblical aromatic generally comes from the Asian and African species Boswellia carteri. |
