calepin. I don’t know of any synonym for a polyglot diction- ary, one in many languages, save the unusual calepin. The word comes from the name of Italian Augustine friar Ambrosio Ca- lepino, who in 1502 published a famous Latin dictionary that went through many editions and was the Latin dictionary of the day. Apparently this Latin dictionary of Calepino’s was published in an “octoglot” edition, which led to the man’s name being employed as it is. Anyway, calepin was used for “a poly- glot dictionary, a dictionary, or any book of authority or refer- ence” until well into the 18th century, and has had limited use since.
