词汇 | sally a ship |
词源 | sally a ship. A ship is sallied, or rolled, by assembling the crew all on one side, then signaling them to rush together to the other side. When the signal is repeated at certain intervals, the ship can be made to roll. In the age of sail, sally was also a common expression for the continuous rising and falling or the swinging or bounding motion of a ship at sea. The word derives from the Middle French saillir, “to rush forward,” which comes from the Latin salire, “to leap.” |
