词汇 | salmon |
词源 | salmon. The often pink-fleshed fish (from the Latin salmon) gives its name to the color salmon, but the salmon’s flesh doesn’t have to be pink—in fact, it is frequently white. Nevertheless, many Americans believe that salmon should be pink to be good. Over half a century ago the legendary advertising genius Elmer Wheeler (he coined the slogan “Don’t sell the steak—sell the sizzle”) was hired by a West Coast salmon cannery to get people to eat the white variety and learn that it is just as tasty. Wheeler had new labels pasted on every can of the company’s huge stock, each of them bearing the slogan: this salmon guar- anteed not to turn pink in the can. |
