词汇 | salk vaccine |
词源 | Salk vaccine; Sabin vaccine. The Salk vaccine is a vaccine composed of inactivated polio viruses used to immunize against polio (poliomyelitis). It was named after American vi- rologist Jonas Edward Salk (1914–95), who developed this first effective killed-virus vaccine against the terrible viral disease (also called infantile paralysis) in 1954. American virologist Albert Sabin developed an oral vaccine, consisting of live polio viruses, at about the same time. Salk, a professor at the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh, first tested his vaccine on a member of his own family. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Di- ego is named in his honor. |
