词汇 | burke-s peerage |
词源 | Burke’s Peerage. Like debrett’s peerage before it, Burke’s Peerage has often been called the “studbook” of the British aris- tocracy. Originally published in 1826, it was fully titled A Gene- alogical and Heraldic History of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom, and has been issued annually since 1847. The famous reference book, the first alphabetical guide to the British aristocracy, was the inspiration of John Burke (1787– 1848), an English genealogist whose family hailed from Tipperary. Burke’s son Sir John Bernard, a genealogist and barrister, assisted him in the compilation, and began its annual re-editing. John Burke also published Burke’s Landed Gentry (1833–38), another work well known by those interested in tracing lost ancestors. |
