词汇 | spot |
词源 | spot. To spot someone something is to give him or her a handicap or concession. The expression is from billiards at a time in the early 19th century when the standard game con- sisted of knocking a red ball into a pocket with the cue ball from a white spot on the table, leaving the cue ball in posi- tion to make another shot. Some players spot shots: In order to equalize games with those less skillful, these experts granted their opponents a certain number of spot shots (as if they had made them). This became known as spotting an opponent points and added a new expression to the language. |
