our country right or wrong. At an 1816 dinner honoring him in Virginia, U.S. naval hero Stephen Decatur gave the toast: “Our Country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong.” This seems to be the origin of the saying our country right or wrong, which is also heard as my country right or wrong. U.S. Senator Carl Schurz paraphrased the expression in an 1872 speech: “Our country right or wrong! When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right.” |
