moniker; monicker. A person’s moniker is his or her name or nickname or alias. The word dates back to mid-19th-century England. It could be simply an alteration of monogram, but there are many theories about its origins. One involved theory says that hoboes called themselves “the monkery” and that be- cause monks assume new names on taking their vows, moniker (as an alteration of monkery) became hobo slang for an as- sumed name. |
