词汇 | mondrian |
词源 | Mondrian. The nonobjective paintings of Dutch artist Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, or Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), have had a tremendous influence on 20th-century design and architec- ture as well as painting. His abstract geometric designs, such as Broadway Boogie Woogie, which hangs in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, are concerned with the geometric order under- lying nature. Mondrian’s dislike of curved lines and use of only primary colors developed, starting in about 1910, when he came under the sway of the French cubists; he is regarded as one of the purest nonobjective painters. The artist’s work influ- enced the German Bauhaus movement, which insisted on modern, functional design in industry, architecture, and interi- or decoration. In the mid-1960s, various Mondrian fashions in women’s suits and dresses were named after his style, the con- nection often tenuous. |
