词汇 | monitor |
词源 | Monitor; Merrimack; Virginia. Though the Civil War battle of the Monitor and Merrimack, the first ironclad action at sea, is a familiar one, there is usually some confusion about the name of the Southern vessel. Actually, she was launched as the Mer- rimack in 1855 at the Boston Navy Yard and was originally a wooden steam frigate. She was then seized by the Confederacy in 1861, encased while in dry dock with double layered railroad iron, renamed the Virginia, and then launched again in 1862. After that time she was called both the Merrimack and the Vir- ginia, even though only the last name was correct. In fact, she was most often referred to as the Merrimac (without the termi- nal k) over the years, a spelling that is totally unjustified. A nickname for the Monitor was the tin can on a shingle. She was the forerunner of today’s battleship. |
