Orthodoxy refers to the quality or state of adhering to traditional or established faith, while heter- odoxy is the condition or quality of being not in agreement with widely accepted beliefs. Wiser definitions, however, may be found in Bishop William Warburton’s reply when Lord Sandwich asked him in a parliamentary debate to define the two words. Replied the bishop: “Orthodoxy is my doxy; hetero- doxy is another man’s doxy.” |
