词汇 | on the side of the angels |
词源 | on the side of the angels. The phrase has long been used for someone who takes a spiritual view of things, or for someone who is on “our” side. Benjamin Disraeli coined it in 1864, be- fore he became Britain’s prime minister, in a speech he made at the Oxford Diocesan Conference opposing the Darwinian the- ory of organic evolution proposed in On The Origin of Species. “The question is this,” he asserted. “Is man an ape or an angel? I, my lord, am on the side of the angels.” Two years later Disraeli gave us another famous quotation. “Ignorance,” he told the House of Commons, “never settles a question.” |
