big fleas have little fleas. The words, a favorite of President John F. Kennedy’s, are found in full in Jonathan Swift’s poem “On Poetry” (1733): “Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite them, / and little fleas have lesser fleas, and so on ad in- finitum.” The similar proverbial saying big fish eat little fish has been around since the 13th century. |
