big kahuna. Originally kahuna in Hawaiian meant “a priest or wise man.” Then, in the mid-1950s, it also came to mean any expert surfer, and by the 1980s it took on the meaning of “an important person or thing,” this last usually in the form of big kahuna: “He’s the big kahuna around here.” The expression is now heard in all the 50 states and in other countries as well. |
