big eyes. Desire or want for someone or something, a term, probably black English, unrecorded in any slang dictionary I’ve consulted. The late great jazz musician Dale Turner recently said in a film biography: “I had big eyes to play with Count Ba- sie’s band, but he told me [ jokingly] one leader was enough.” Dictionary of American Regional English lists a big eye (singu- lar) defined as “greed, covetousness” and that entry may be the basis for the slightly different, much lighter Turner expression. One scholar calls big eye originally a Gullah phrase that is a translation of an African Ibo expression literally meaning “eye big.”
