词汇 big nose
词源
big nose. A slurname given mainly to Americans and British, among others, by some Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese, who apparently believe occidentals have big noses. The term, first recorded in 1952, is said to be a translation of a Chinese expression. During the Korean conflict the U.N. forces, espe- cially Americans, were called kho-jang-ee—big noses. Then again, the Koreans may have had a reason not to favor large prominent noses. When the brutal Japanese warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea in 1592, according to James L. Mc- Clain’s Japan: A Modern History (2002), he and his men hacked off tens of thousands of noses from the faces of Koreans, ship- ping them back to Kyoto, where he displayed them in a hideous pile for all to see.
