词汇 | big shot |
词源 | big shot. Italian general Giuseppe Garibaldi’s forces used a 90mm cannon against the Austrians. The big projectile it fired was translated into English by Garibaldi’s American followers as the big shot, which came to mean a big, important person. Such, at least, is one version of the origin of big shot, an Ameri- canism first recorded in 1910, some 30 years after Garibaldi had breathed his last. Another theory traces big shot to the late 1920s, deriving it from the much older big gun and applying it to important people, especially ganglords. |
