And what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord, and he slew him also.” This passage from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible (Gen. 38:8–11) shows what scholars have long told us, that Onan was not a habitual mas- turbator as the word onanism suggests. It is not even clear from the biblical passage whether Onan’s one such mentioned act was masturbation or coitus interruptus, and many biblical scholars tell us that his real sin was not onanism but his refusal to take the childless Tamar to bed, get her with child, and rear their offspring as the son of his dead brother in accordance with the law of the levirate marriage.
