Any incurable optimist is called a Dr. Pan- gloss after the pedantic old tutor of the same name in Voltaire’s Candide, or the Optimist (1759), which was an attack against Rousseau’s philosophy. Dr. Pangloss remained optimistic to the end, despite all his misfortunes, believing “all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.”
