词汇 howl
词源
howl. To utter a long mournful sound; to cry or wail loudly, as in pain, sorrow or anger. Howl comes from the Middle En- glish howlen. “Howl, howl, howl! O! you are men of stones . . . She’s gone forever!” howls Lear at Cordelia’s death in King Lear (1605). A famous modern use of the word is American poet Al- len Ginsberg’s poem Howl (1956), a Whitmanesque work that begins with the line “I saw the best minds of my generation de- stroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked . . .”
