Hardy’s last book. Thomas Hardy was proud of his many years, and when preparing his Winter Words for publication in 1928, he wrote in the preface, “So far as I am aware, I happen to be the only English poet who has brought out a new volume of verse on his—birthday . . .” He had intended to write “eighty- ninth” in the blank space, but didn’t quite make another birthday—the book appeared posthumously. |
