词汇 frisbee
词源
Frisbee. Frisbee is the trademarked name for a plastic, con- cave disk used in catching games between two or more players, who spin the disk off into the air with a flick of the wrist. The disk and name are said to have been inspired by a similar game played by Yale students, who tossed about disposable metal pie tins that came from pies made by the Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The modern plastic Frisbee, howev- er, is said to have been invented by William Morrison, who sold it to the Wham-O Manufacturing Company in 1955 and whose name is on the patent. Then Ed Headrick (1924–2002), head of research at Wham-O, further improved the product, changing its name from the Pluto Platter to Frisbee, a name that Wham-O says does not derive from the pie company name, despite the similarity, coming instead from a once- popular comic strip called “Mr. Frisbie.” It is estimated that about 4 million people play Frisbee; no one knows how many dogs play. Just before his death Mr. Headrick told a reporter that “Frisbyterians,” loyal Frisbee enthusiasts, don’t go to pur- gatory when they die: “We just land up on the roof and lay there.” See hula-hoop.
